We loaded Astrid’s drums into the trunk, said goodbye to Frank—a side of Sundance I wasn’t even aware existed—and Deja began to drive us home. None of us talked. But not for lack of anything to talk about. I think we were all just processing.

Deja broke the silence. “Random question: Do y’all have a band manager?”

Astrid ended up riding shotgun, which meant that she immediately turned back and looked at us with her eyeballs bulging. Nothing inconspicuous about it. If we were trying to play it cool, we were failing.

“No…?” I said, hoping that wasn’t the wrong answer.

“What if I was your band manager?” said Deja. The moment she said it, she seemed to immediately rethink it. “Is that weird? It’s weird, isn’t it.”

Astrid basically didn’t budge from her awkward, turned-around position. But she did open her mouth. I could see her retainer on the roof of her mouth. It was kind of gross.

“Look, I’m not trying to make a dime off your minute in the spotlight,” said Deja. “When it comes to what you guys are doing—who you are—money does not interest me. I don’t want to see a cent. What I want is for you guys to succeed. I want this country to succeed. And right now, it’s not. Right now, America is rooted in patriarchal dogma, blindness to perspective, and unwillingness to change. If anything has changed, it’s empowerment to prejudice and bravery among bigots. But you four… you four are change. You’re change, and you’re hope, and you’re—quite frankly—kind of insane, and I love it. What I’m trying to say is—”

“YES,” said Astrid. “A THOUSAND TIMES YES.”

“What?” said Deja. “Really?”

“Um, yes please,” Angus said, hands pressed flat together, ready to beg.

“You’re basically the coolest person that we know,” Danny explained.

“If you’re our band manager, is it tacky to ask for an autograph?” I asked.

“Okay!” said Deja, nodding overexcitedly. Against all logic, she was acting like she’d just been accepted by the cool kids. “First things first, we need to give you guys a social media presence. Do you have a name?”
